Island Quartets

"Can I get the village, the nostalgic ANWB sign in Hollum from you? Perfect, another quartet" Cycling through Ameland feels like playing an enjoyable game of quartets. On the island, you’ll find at least four stunning examples of almost every theme—whether it's villages, landscapes, small museums, or unique monuments, just to name a few. As you cycle across the expansive Wadden island, you'll collect all the pieces along the way.

Islands and Mainland

On your 9-day journey, you’ll primarily explore islands: Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, Vlieland, or Terschelling. Each island offers a scenic route to fully appreciate its beauty. After Schiermonnikoog, you’ll return to the mainland, visiting Dokkum and Leeuwarden as well. You can reach the islands from Harlingen and Holwerd.

Hip Vliebiza

Vlieland has only one village. Boring? Not at all! Take a stroll down the Dorpsstraat—the main street of Oost-Vlieland—and you'll immediately understand why the island is jokingly called "Vliebiza," a blend of Vlieland and Ibiza. On either side, you'll find trendy restaurants with cool names like "Puur" and "Gestrand," mixed in with lifestyle shops and charming little boutiques selling brightly colored hippie accessories, beachwear, and Havaianas. Our tip: after a refreshing walk in the dunes, head to coffee bar Leut (Dorpsstraat 118) and treat yourself to a delicious cranberry cheesecake.

Influential Family

When visiting the village of Ballum on Ameland, be sure to stop by the old cemetery. In the mortuary chapel, you'll find the graves of the Camminghas, the family that ruled the island for many years. They owned Ameland as early as 1429. Near the cemetery, they once had a sturdy castle, but fame fades, and so did their residence. The castle was demolished in 1829, and its stone rubble was used to help build the dikes on Terschelling. The enormous stone covering their family tomb (weighing 3,000 kilograms and one of the largest gravestones in Friesland) stands as a symbol of their centuries-long dominance. It also explains why Ballum's main street bears their name.

During this cycle tour, you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the unique landscape on and around the Wadden Sea. This nature reserve in the north of the Netherlands has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. You cycle on Vlieland or Terschelling and cycle and stay overnight on Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. You return to Harlingen via Dokkum and Leeuwarden.
