Head Over Heels for Beautiful Tuscany

Ding-Dong. The heavy bells of the Santa Maria del Fiore echo from afar. The famous Duomo, adorned with three colors of marble, seems far too grand for this relatively small city. From the Campanile, the tower next to the Duomo, you can truly appreciate how impressive the church is. But honestly, everything in Florence is just as awe-inspiring.

Love at First Sight

The journey sets off in beautiful Siena, Florence's historic rival. From there, you'll cycle through rolling hills, past stately cypress trees, and visit charming ancient villages. It’s impossible not to fall in love with this enchanting landscape. Passing through San Donato and Florence, the towers of San Gimignano rise into view. The journey continues to the historic Volterra and the fortified hilltop village of Monteriggioni.

Majestic Towers

The noble families in the charming town of San Gimignano competed fiercely with one another. Their towers served as fortifications but were also clear symbols of power and wealth. Each family would build a taller tower to outdo the others, resulting in a total of 72 towers at the height of the rivalry. Today, only sixteen towers remain, but they are no less impressive.

Artistic Florence

In Florence, art is woven into the fabric of everyday life. It’s no wonder, with residents like Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Donatelli among its many renowned artists. Florence is truly a city for art and culture lovers, with a distinctly medieval character centered around the Palazzo Vecchio. Be sure to visit San Lorenzo, the parish church of the Medici (Piazza di San Lorenzo 9). Michelangelo designed the tombs for the family, featuring monumental sculptures representing Night, Day, Morning, and Evening.

Medieval Siena

Siena, Florence's great rival, has also preserved its medieval charm. From the oldest Dominican church on the edge of the city center, you can easily walk to the Piazza del Campo, where the lively Palio horse races take place every year. From there, you can stroll to the Duomo and the Baptistery. Then, it’s time to relax at a café and enjoy a heavenly gelato.

In Italy, people mostly eat outside the hotel door, which is why you stay on a bed and breakfast basis. There are therefore many good restaurants where you can enjoy an (extensive) Italian meal.
