With its half-timbered houses, castles, vineyards, and onion-shaped churches, the area around this lake, which links Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is brimming with romance. Cycling around Europe’s fourth-largest lake, you’ll pass through centuries-old towns, enjoy stunning views over the busy waters, and follow a nearly car-free bike route.
Your journey begins in Bregenz, Austria, and takes you to Rorschach, Switzerland, a thousand-year-old harbor town with elegant baroque mansions in the heart of the city. Next, you’ll cycle to Konstanz. After visiting the flower island of Mainau, cross the lake to reach the German town of Meerburg. The towns on this side seem even more enchanting, and the castles more imposing. After passing through the modern city of Friedrichshafen, home to the Zeppelin Museum, the end of the trip is in sight. This 8-day tour also includes a stop at the famous Schaffhausen waterfalls.
Arguably the most delightful city around Lake Constance is the German town of Konstanz. Its lively Old Town is small and easy to explore on foot. In the market square, a well-dressed woman enjoys a pastry while students in flip-flops casually stroll by. However, the city’s history was not always this peaceful. In 1415, the Bohemian reformer Jan Hus was burned at the stake here. His life is memorialized at the Husmuseum, located at Hussenstraße 64, offering insight into this pivotal moment in history.
Meersburg is home to the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. Cycle through the medieval city gate, and find yourself in a true timber-framed charm. The steep Steigstraße leads you to the small uptown, where you’ll discover the castle and a baroque palace. The Gasthaus Zum Löwen, generously covered in lilacs, has been serving as an inn since 1605, where wine from the local vineyards has always flowed abundantly. It’s also the perfect spot for Kaffee und Kuchen.
