Living the Good Life

On this cycling holiday, you’ll travel from Orange to places like St. Paul Trois Châteaux, Rasteau, Pernes-les-Fontaines, Gigondas, and Mazan, home to the former château of the Marquis de Sade. The area is steeped in history and offers a wide variety of sun-ripened wines, vegetables, and fruits. You might even catch glimpses of purple lavender in bloom, framing the gently rolling vineyards like those just above Châteauneuf du Pape. “Fancy taking a bottle home?”

A Feast for the Eyes

Beyond the natural beauty, the towns here are a treat as well. There’s picturesque Pernes-les-Fontaines with its 36 fountains, and Monteux with its two charming city gates. Don’t miss historic Orange, with its impressive Roman amphitheater. At the end of each day, enjoy dining in restaurants that attract even the most discerning French food lovers, with several featured in the Bottin Gourmand, Gault Millau, or awarded a Bib Gourmand.

Emperors and Princes in Orange

Orange boasts two unique monuments from the 1st century AD, which UNESCO has included on its World Heritage List. The Roman amphitheater, built for Emperor Augustus, is remarkably well-preserved. It was a leading theater in Roman times, and even today, its acoustics are superb. The Roman triumphal arch is equally magnificent. To see the remains of the Château of the Princes of Orange, take a stroll through the wooded park on Saint-Eutrope Hill.

Counting Fountains

The charming town of Pernes-les-Fontaines is home to no less than 36 fountains, ranging from discreet to massive. One features mask heads, while another is draped in moss. Follow the fountain route (circuit des fontaines) and discover them all. Something else worth mentioning are the medieval city walls, which remain intact and include gates like the 14th-century Notre-Dame gate, with its two towers by the river.
