In eight days, you’ll follow the Loire River and visit the finest residences of the French nobility. Highlights include the breathtaking Château de Chambord, the elegant Chenonceau, the beautiful Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, and the château in Tours. Starting in Orléans, the city of Joan of Arc, you'll cycle through Blois, Amboise, and Tours to reach your final destination, Saumur, with part of the route following the Cher River along dike roads.

Flamboyant King

As you cycle, you unravel the stories behind the stunning sights by the water. Tales of jealousy and infidelity, of extravagant castle banquets, and a life of luxury in France. Take, for example, the flamboyant King Francis I. He knew no limits. Château de Chambord boasts an incredible 365 towers, 440 rooms, 282 chimneys, and an impressive double spiral staircase, most likely designed by Leonardo da Vinci.

The many shades of love

Château Villandry is renowned for its fantastic Renaissance-style gardens, featuring winding boxwood hedges, graceful yew trees, and arbors covered with fragrant roses. Each garden has a specific theme. For instance, the Jardins d'Amour consists of four square boxwood sections, each representing a different type of love: tender love symbolized by hearts, passionate love represented by broken hearts, fickle love, and tragic love depicted with knives and swords.

Sometimes you cycle a quiet alternative route, car-free through the valley. Many famous castles are on this route, such as those of Chambord and Villandry. The beautiful landscapes around the Loire are constantly changing. The river has many meanders, wooded islets and sandbanks. And after a day of cycling, the local cuisine is sure to please.
