Heavenly Algarve

Silves in the Algarve feels like a place frozen in time, though about a thousand years ago, it was very different. As the capital of the Algarve, Silves flourished under the rule of Arab kings. The Moorish castle still stands as a reminder of that era, along with remnants of defense towers and towering city walls. Visit the 13th-century cathedral, stroll through the quiet streets, and stop at Largo do Municipio to enjoy a refreshing coffee at Café Da Rosa. Or, even better: iced coffee. A scoop of vanilla ice cream melting slowly into the warm coffee—pure bliss!

Scenic Ride

The Algarve is full of charming places like this. Starting in Faro, you’ll cycle through regions with olive and almond trees, be amazed by the rugged farmland, climb the occasional hill, and explore many authentic villages like Porches, Alte, and the picturesque, historic port town of Tavira. In the final stretch of this ride, you’ll follow the beautiful lagoon coastline and make your way back to Faro, passing through the fishing village of Olhão.

Devout Tavira

Located about 30 km east of Faro, Tavira is one of the most picturesque towns in the Algarve. A Roman bridge crosses the Gilão River, and evidence of settlement dates back to the 8th century BC. The Phoenicians, Romans, and later the Moors all left their mark on this beautiful white village, which has expanded over the years. Tavira is particularly known for its religious significance, boasting over twenty churches. Don’t miss the Igreja da Misericórdia, renowned for its stunning azulejos (decorative tiles). For a delightful coffee break, head to Pastelaria Veneza at Praça da República 8, and enjoy some heavenly Pastéis de Nata.

Silves for foodies

The Gothic cathedral and the Moorish castle immediately catch your eye. In front of the castle stands a statue of Dom Sancho, who liberated the city from the Moors in the 12th century. If this Dom could walk, he would certainly head a few streets further to Café DaRosa at Largo di Município 7. Sit down for an espresso with a scoop of ice cream in it. You’ll want to return just for that. And by the way... they also serve delicious Pastéis de Nata here.

Sneak Peek at the Rich Neighbors: Palacio d’Estói

It’s always fun to take a peek into the lives of the rich and famous. Usually, it’s just a fleeting view through a massive gate, hoping the security doesn’t notice. But at this lovely residence, things are a bit different. Located just north of Faro, the Palacio d’Estói is a stunning palace built in 1840, showcasing a blend of baroque, rococo, and art nouveau styles. The gardens are adorned with classical statues and water features. Now a luxurious pousada, part of the palace still displays the baroque opulence from its original design. And as a passing cyclist, you can take a peek inside—just stop by the reception to say hello!

Lively Loulé

Markets are a staple across the Algarve, but the ones in Loulé have a special charm. The Saturday morning market still captures the essence of traditional local life. Gypsies and farm workers from the area sell a variety of items: melons, dates, almonds, honey, fresh fish, dried fish, piri-piri spices, and much more. Inside the old covered market hall, you’ll be greeted by a cacophony of sounds and scents. Alongside fresh produce, you’ll also find handmade goods like wicker baskets.
