Three Countries, One Journey

Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia in one single week: This bike tour immerses you in the history of the ancient Republic of Venice, known as the Serenissima. Your adventure begins with a boat ride, taking the vaporetto ferry from the iconic Piazza San Marco to Punta Sabbioni, the southernmost point of the Adriatic coast.

Crossing Borders

From there, you’ll cycle north along the beautiful coastline, passing through the Friuli plains and arriving in Portogruaro, once an important hub in the Serenissima Republic of Venice. The town still boasts its ornate palaces. After Trieste, you’ll cycle into Slovenia and Croatia, eventually reaching the stunning Istrian coast. The journey ends with a boat ride back to Venice.

Divine Ice Cream in a Hidden Neighborhood

Be sure to explore the lesser-known districts of Venice, like the working-class neighborhood of Dorsoduro. Stroll past the workshops of mask makers and visit the last remaining boatyard where gondolas are still handcrafted. Don't miss the temptations of Nico, one of the best gelaterias in the city. His heavenly ice cream can be found at Zattere 922.

Clever Gondola Experience

As you cycle from Venice to the Croatian town of Poreč, you’ll want to stop in the Doge’s city and enjoy a gondola ride. However, these rides can be pricey. The traghetto offers a similar experience, for much less. This gondola ferry crosses the Grand Canal at seven points and costs just €2. While a traditional gondola ride costs around €80 and lasts about half an hour, the traghetto ride is much shorter but still provides you with the experience.

Venetian and Roman Influence

Croatia is known for its azure seas, rugged coastlines, picturesque bays and beaches, remarkable nature, and warm hospitality. In addition, you’ll find cities with vibrant façades, such as the Venetian town of Poreč. Don’t miss the Euphrasian Basilica (a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Byzantine art) and take a leisurely walk through its quaint streets. Poreč also has a rich Roman history, with remnants of typical Roman street layouts, including the Decumanus Maximus and Cardo Maximus as the central roads.

A Coffee Break

Drinking coffee in Trieste is as essential as eating pizza in Naples – it’s a true Italian experience. Since the 18th century, Trieste has been the gateway for all coffee entering Europe. Hermann Hausbrandt played a key role in ensuring that coffee could be stored for longer periods, while Francesco Illy founded the iconic coffee brand here. Renowned writers like James Joyce and Franz Kafka also enjoyed their coffee in this city. For a classic coffee experience, visit the historic Café San Marco (Via Cesare Battisti 18) or the equally famous Stella Polare (Via Dante Alighieri 14).
