Zeeland's Paradise

Walcheren has received its fair share of admiration. King Louis Napoleon once referred to it as the "Paradise of Zeeland", while author Remco Campert described it as a "Green Jewel". Cycling along the polder, sometimes on a pleasantly crunchy shell path, you can take in the lush green polder landscape. At other times, the path dips down, offering a sheltered ride alongside the dikes.

Choose your routes

You could cycle to Veere, known for its historic warehouses and grand merchant houses. The full route of Walcheren includes highlights like Westkapelle, Domburg, the stunning De Manteling nature reserve, and Goes. Add a visit to Schouwen-Duiveland with stops in Burgh-Haamstede, Renesse, and Zierikzee, and you’ll eventually return to the charming Middelburg. For those wanting more, the route can be extended with cycling trips to Sluis, Bruges, and Knokke.

Zeeuwse Button Restored to Glory

Around 1590, a marriage record mentions a button maker from Vlissingen, marking the button’s evolution from a practical item to a decorative element in clothing. Often crafted from bone or copper, wealthier individuals opted for silver or gold. For centuries, the button, as part of the traditional Zeeland costume, symbolized a rich cultural heritage. After falling into obscurity, the button has made a comeback and is now available in many forms, from baking molds to chocolates. These can be found, among other places, at the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.

Scottish Connections in Veere

The warehouses and merchant houses in Veere tell stories of its trading past. Names like “De Struys” and “Het Lammeken” recall the wool trade with Scotland. When Wolfert VI of Borsele, Lord of Veere, married Mary Stewart, daughter of Scottish King James I, Veere became the primary trading hub for Scottish wool in the Low Countries. “De Struys” once was home to a Scottish merchant and later owned by a British millionaire and his daughter. Their collection of antiques and Zeeland traditional costumes now forms the basis of the museum De Schotse Huizen. Address: Kaai 25.
