Textiles... and More

Wherever you are in Twente, you will always encounter its illustrious textile history. The mansions of the textile barons or remnants of the large factories. In Delden, the factory on Kortestraat is now a supermarket, with the factory chimney still standing at the entrance. Other remnants can be found in the Roombeek district of Enschede, almost completely rebuilt after the fireworks disaster. Two water towers and three factory buildings now house, among other things, restaurants and shops.

Three Cycling Routes

For this holiday, three routes have been planned. First, cycle through the ridges around Oldenzaal to the Singraven Castle. You will pass through Beuningen, Lutterzand, and the Arboretum Poortbulten. The route to the Twickel estate and castle takes you through the villages of Saasveld, Hertme, and Zenderen, as well as the charming town of Borne. Finally, you will visit Enschede and Oldenzaal. You can also take a walk in the recreational park 't Hulsbeek.

Spirits at Singraven

The Singraven estate lies peacefully, but appearances can be deceiving. The castle has been haunted for centuries. Around 1505, it was inhabited for ten years by the nuns of the Oldenzaal Beguinage. One of the beguines literally ran her head into the wall. She was said to have engaged in immoral acts with some villagers. When she was exposed by the other nuns, a mock trial ensued. The outcome was predictable. The nun received a punishment typical for that time: she was bricked alive in a wall. For days, the local residents could hear her lamentations. From the moment it fell silent, the haunting began at the elegant castle.

Art of a Textile Director

After textile baron Jan Bernard van Heek passed away in 1929 at the Zonnebeek estate, just outside Enschede, he left behind more than two hundred valuable paintings, including works by 17th- and 18th-century masters. His plan to make these accessible to the public was carried out by his family. The paintings can be seen at the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, in a building from 1929. Address: Lasondersingel 129-131.

Torture Chair with Nails

In the Palthe House in Oldenzaal, you’ll find 'The Chair of Huttenkloas.' This torture chair was used in the 16th century to extract confessions from murderers. The seat was fitted with nails, and an iron belt was tightened around their waist. This was also the case for Klaas Annink. A brutal robbery at the impoverished Klaas’s home, a sod house, ended in murder. The story goes that the poor man sat on the 'prickly' chair for 110 days before he confessed. And the punishment that followed was also harsh for that time.
