From Workum, the route follows a beautiful cycle path along the Flakke and Aldegeaster Brekken to the old Hanseatic city of Bolsward. Once situated on three mounds on the former Middelzee, this town has a beautiful centre with canals and dozens of monuments. Next, you cycle to IJlst, traditionally a town of woodworking and shipbuilding. A remnant of this is the sawmill De Rat, which is still in full operation. After this, it's not far to Sneek. This town, formed from two closely situated mounds, was surrounded by ramparts and moats in the 16th century. It became Friesland's best defended town and grew into a market town. The town's showpiece is the watergate from 1613.
