Dutch Highlights

Can you keep up with all these amazing sights? From the canal houses in Amsterdam and the Zaanse Schans with its iconic wooden houses and sawmills, to the impressive St. Bavo Church in Haarlem, the royal palaces in The Hague, and the very spot where William of Orange was assassinated in Delft (check out the bullet holes). Don’t forget the cube houses and other modern architecture in Rotterdam, the windmills at Kinderdijk (another UNESCO World Heritage site on this trip), and the historic market square in Gouda, make sure to pack some stroopwafels or Gouda cheese for the road.

Culture and Nature

Feeling alright? You probably are, because between all these cultural highlights, you’ll find plenty of chances to relax in nature. Explore the stunning dunes of Kennemerland National Park and the area around Noordwijk, the peaceful polder landscape near Kinderdijk, and the refreshing Nieuwkoop Lakes. Then cycle back along the Amstel River to Amsterdam. “Hey, we still haven’t seen the ‘Night Watch’ yet, just a little more to explore.”

Anatomy Lesson

While in Amsterdam, be sure to visit the café-restaurant “In de Waag,” located in the Waag building right in the bustling Nieuwmarkt. This iconic structure was originally built between 1425 and 1488 as a city gate. Inside, you can immediately feel the rich history of the place. Upstairs, Rembrandt famously portrayed the surgeons’ guild in his masterpiece, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. This prestigious commission certainly helped boost the young Rembrandt’s reputation at the time.

Hares and Students

Have you ever heard of the Billenburch? Back in the Middle Ages, men definitely knew where to find it. This was the area where public women, known as haasjes (hares), worked, and today it lies just behind one of the country’s most beautiful canals, the Rapenburg. Along this canal, you’ll also find the student dormitory where, among others, Beatrix and Willem-Alexander lived during their university years. Fun fact: the city of keys has always had a strong student presence. In the 19th century, photographer Israel Kiek captured candid snapshots of the already lively student parties. Along the Groenhazegracht, you’ll come across the former Billenburch,  the pink house at number 3 serves as a reminder of the old red-light district.
