More Beautiful Than a Painting

The river Dinkel ensures that the landscape of East Twente is among the most beautiful natural areas in the Netherlands. Jacob van Ruisdael was inspired by the natural beauty of this land for at least seventeen paintings. His painting of the Singraven watermill now hangs in the Louvre. But you don’t need to go to Paris to admire it. You can experience it for real!

Characteristic Twente
You’ll visit the Singraven estate during your cycling tour to the beautiful and ancient town of Ootmarsum. Other routes take you to Enschede, the villages of Saasveld, Beuningen, and Weerselo. During this cross-border holiday, you’ll also visit Bad Bentheim, just across the border in Germany. Here, you can explore the impressive castle perched atop the hill. You can also take a walk to Oldenzaal, where you’ll enjoy the understated beauty of Twente, with its generously wooded lands, characteristic hedgerows, and small and large farms.

Het Stift

In 1151, the Benedictines founded a double monastery here. The former women’s and men’s monastery, which was destroyed by fire, was predominantly inhabited by nuns a century later. They allowed women of noble descent to live here, where they received a good education. Gradually, the strict monastic rules were less adhered to, and from the beginning of the 16th century, it became an aristocratic Stift. The Stift Church, built around 1400 from Bentheimer sandstone, is open for visits. On the grounds of Het Stift, you'll also find the Stift School and the Stift Barn, which is now a restaurant. This beautiful square was once the ecclesiastical and administrative center of Weerselo. The entire area has been a protected village view since 1973 and is now privately inhabited.

City Walls Still to Follow

The town may be old (founded in 126 AD), but it doesn’t suffer from its age. Othmarsheim became Ootmarsum, which was fortunate enough to be located on the trade route from western Netherlands to northern Germany. In 1300, it was granted city rights, complete with canals, city walls, and gates. However, during the Eighty Years’ War, Prince Maurits had all of this filled in and demolished. But to this day, you can still follow their course. Nice one, Maurits.

The Curse of Singraven

Once, it was a monastery. To prevent the building from collapsing, a nun was bricked up alive as a building offering. Her spirit was said to haunt the place every night, causing unrest to the souls of the inhabitants. In 1878, when the then lord of the Singraven estate knocked over an oil lamp, he succumbed to his injuries. "It’s the curse," people concluded. Of course, this is just a tale. But the fact remains that very few families have lived here without being struck by misfortune.
