Romance Along the Riesling

The timber-framed villages and impressive castles create a stunning backdrop for river romance, but it’s the Riesling vineyards on the mountainsides that truly shine. Occasionally, you’ll stop at a local vineyard to pick up a bottle of exquisite white wine—perfect for slipping into your bag! This scenic ride takes you along the river from Trier to Koblenz, where the winding path along the water adds an extra layer of charm to your cycling adventure. With every turn, another delightful surprise awaits.

Flamboyant Shop Signs

Start your journey with a train ride from Trier to Merzig, then cycle back, passing through Neumagen-Dorn and the picturesque towns of Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach. The route takes you straight ahead, with the enchanting Moselle river always either to your left or right. As you pass through Zell, Cochem, and Treis-Karden—towns with just enough room for their main streets lined with eye-catching shop signs—you’ll arrive in Koblenz, known for its atmospheric Old Town and the iconic Deutsches Eck.

Trier - Day 1Moselle Cycling HolidayTrier

Roman Trier

At the dawn of our era, the Romans introduced viticulture to this region, but their influence extended far beyond that. In Trier, the oldest city in Germany and once the capital of the Western Roman Empire, their legacy is still visible. In the 2,000-year-old amphitheater, 20,000 spectators would watch gladiators in thrilling combat. Many of them entered the city through the Porta Nigra, which now stands as black as soot.

Enchanting Bernkastel

The right side of the twin town Bernkastel-Kues, Bernkastel, undoubtedly is the most enchanting. Perhaps it's the impressive ruins, or maybe the charming cobbled streets, the beautiful market square, and the array of medieval half-timbered houses. The 17th-century Renaissance town hall is another highlight, along with the St. Michaels Fountain and the St. Michael parish church. Be sure to marvel at the Spitzhäuschen, the fragile little pointed house that has appeared to teeter on its tiny pedestal since 1416.
