Cycling around Rügen

Since 1900, it has been a popular holiday destination, and for good reason. The mild climate, long sandy beaches, and forests proved ideal for catching your breath in a fast-paced era of modernization. This is how it has always been on Rügen. And today, the largest island of Germany in the Baltic Sea is more attractive than ever. History has left behind stately buildings and bathhouses, reminders of the rich beach life of the past.

Varied cycling routes

By bike, you have all the time to take it all in. From Bergen, we have marked out seven beautiful cycling routes. Among them is a route to the important spa town of Ostseebad Binz, with its Kurhaus and typical early 20th-century spa architecture. You can also visit the frequently visited Jagdschloss Granitz. Further routes lead to the historic Garz and the charming Putbus. Of course, there are also many routes through nature, such as to the famous chalk cliffs, the deciduous forests of the Jasmund National Park, and the cormorant colony at the Nonnensee.

Top attraction of Rügen

From your cozy family hotel on the edge of the town of Bergen, you can explore the Königsstuhl, one of the top attractions of Rügen. This 118-meter-high rock rises above the snow-white chalk coast of Jasmund. It’s an amazing feeling to look out over the blue-green Baltic Sea from this point. Look closely, and you’ll see the breeding sites of the rare sea eagle and house martin in the rocks.

Most beautiful promenade

The promenade in Binz is the best of all the promenades in the seaside resorts on the east coast. Nearly 2.5 km long, you walk between the beach and the white seaside architecture from around 1900. Ulrich Müther, the island's architect, added his own quirky constructions. Like a lifeguard tower shaped like E.T.'s head and, in Sassnitz, a music pavilion shaped like a whale's tail fin. By the way, you can also experience this nostalgic feeling during your bike rides. Some roads are still from before 1900, from the time when the bathing culture was emerging and guests were driven to the beach in horse-drawn carriages.

Chilling in the beach chair

In our country, the beach chair has almost disappeared, but along the German Wadden Sea, the woven chair is still widely found. The first beach chair was made in 1882 for the noble Friederike Maltzahn. During her visit to the beach, she wanted to protect herself from the sun and wind. The royal basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann fulfilled her request. A year later, the two-person beach chair was rented out for the first time. Although they have disappeared in our country, they can still be found everywhere on Rügen. On sunny days, they provide wonderful shade, and when it's colder, protection from the wind. Just chill... in the beach chair of the past.

Routes

Rügen, Germany's largest island, lies in the Baltic Sea and is a perfect cycling island with many faces: jagged bays and lagoon-like inland lakes; long beaches, steep coastlines, and towering chalk cliffs. In the gently rolling interior, you'll find ancient forests, vast fields, small villages with brick churches, and the former residence town of Putbus. In the lively seaside resorts, you'll see the classic white villas along wide beaches and long promenades.
You cycle on bike paths (high) along the coast, over quiet roads inland, and along ancient cobblestones in the towns.
The cozy family hotel is located on the Rugard, a ridge on the edge of the centrally located town of Bergen. The hotel has a spacious terrace at the foot of an impressive observation tower and also offers a few apartments.
