Varied Beauty Along the Baltic Sea

It feels great, especially when you’re moving under your own power. Since you’re cycling from west to east, you’ll almost always have the wind at your back. Plenty of energy, then, to take in the sights. Cycling along the German Baltic coast, you’ll see flat shores, blue-green fjords, dreamy bays, and countless small islands – a paradise for nature lovers. And culture lovers? They’ll be more than satisfied too. Before you reach your final destination, Stralsund – a Gothic masterpiece in red brick – you’ll pass through centuries-old Hanseatic cities like Lübeck, Wismar, and Rostock. And along the way, you’ll hop on and off a (pen)insula – sometimes even by ferry.

Nature and Cozy Villages

You start in beautiful Lübeck with its canals and the impressive Holstentor. Next come the Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock. The beaches of the seaside resorts Kühlungsborn and Warnemünde provide a refreshing change of scenery. Especially on day six, you’ll experience the unique Bodden landscape, a habitat for many water birds. On this day, you’ll also lean your bike against the facades of cozy villages like Wieck and Ahrenshoop. The latter, in particular, attracted many artists who captured the beauty of the village and the landscape in their paintings. You can admire them in the local museum.

Stunning Stralsund

The Hanseatic city of Stralsund impresses with its many Gothic red brick buildings and a charming old town island. Thanks to its medieval charm, the more than 800-year-old city was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Be sure to visit the 13th-century town hall as well as the Gothic Wulflamhaus and Dielenhaus – all prime examples of the city’s former prosperity. In fact, things were going so well that the residents of rival Hanseatic city Lübeck burned down the young town completely in 1249. But Stralsund refused to be defeated and grew into a stunning and highly important trading city, where wood and hops, grain, fish, and beer were successfully traded. Take that, Lübeck!

Enchanting Bodden

Even though you’re cycling along the coast, it’s anything but boring. Since only about thirty percent of the German Baltic Sea coast faces the open sea, there’s plenty to discover. Like the calm waters you’ll sometimes see. Huh? Surrounded by reeds? That’s not what you’d expect at the sea. These mostly enclosed bodies of brackish water are called Bodden. In the shallow waters between the coast and the islands, many water birds make their home. The enchanting landscape has been captured by artists in paintings, which you can admire in the artist village of Ahrenshoop.
