To the Fullest

Cycling and wine tasting – do they really go together? “Yes, better than driving and wine tasting,” you might say. Okay, but in moderation, of course. While a few glasses may give you wings, you’ll also need to tackle a few hills here and there. Better to tuck a bottle in your bag to enjoy after your journey. For now, take in the stunning routes that wind through vineyards of places like Pommard and Meursault.

Cycling and Dining

This culinary journey begins in the picturesque town of Beaune. You’ll start cycling directly through Burgundy’s most famous wine villages, known for their Grand Cru wines. Feeling like a little tasting? Sure! Once you've arrived to the Canal du Centre, the cycling will be pleasant and easy. After that, the journey leads through places like Dracy-le-Fort and Chalon-sur-Saône. The 7-day route takes you a bit further: to Tournus, Macon, and the abbey of Cluny. And the evenings? They will be filled with delightful dining. Opt for a dinner upgrade in Beaune, and you’ll enjoy two meals at a Michelin-starred restaurant. In short, this is definitely a holiday to savor to the fullest.

Medieval Refuge

Like many other French cities, Beaune takes pride in its medieval city walls and historic buildings. However, the true gem is the Hôtel-Dieu, also known as the Hospices de Beaune. Founded in 1443, it served as a refuge for residents suffering from hunger and poverty due to the Hundred Years' War. For over 500 years, it operated as a hospital for the poor. Today, you can marvel at the kitchen, the pharmacy, and the grand hall with 28 canopy beds, along with its impressive ceiling and chapel. A highlight of medieval architecture.

Cluny Decides

Approaching Cluny, you'll be able to spot the town from afar, perched atop a hill. Today, it has no more than five hundred residents, but once, the Benedictine monastery there was a force of power. More than a thousand monasteries were governed from Cluny, and both popes and kings sought guidance from its counsel. Whether it was about the Crusades to Palestine or the reconquest of Spain from the Moors, there was always a Benedictine from Cluny involved in offering guidance; Cluny decided. Nowadays, you can still sense the wealth of medieval Cluny here.

Merci monsieur

Ever heard of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce? Probably not. However, after your visit to Chalon-sur-Saône, you’ll know better. As early as 1826, this Frenchman took photos by exposing a plate coated with a light-sensitive layer of bitumen, a type of asphalt, to light in a camera obscura. Patience was a virtue, with an exposure time of eight hours! But voilà, the first photograph was born. This charming wine town, with its beautiful half-timbered houses, has a museum dedicated to this photography pioneer. A visit will ensure that every time you look at your holiday photos, you'll remember him. Merci, Monsieur Niépce.

Mini Wine Tasting Course

Most French wines still use a cork. Smell the cork; it shouldn’t have a corky smell. Fill your glass about a third full. Hold the glass at an angle and steady. Give the wine a little sniff. Then, swirl the glass to aerate the wine. Take small sips and let the wine circulate in your mouth for about ten seconds. This way, you’ll taste if the wine is “elegant,” “stubborn,” or “robust.” And finally: spit it out and define the aftertaste—it might be “honest” or even “bold.” TIP: Of course, you can also swallow and pop a bottle in your bike bag for later!
