The next day, cycle to Lamarque where you take a boat across the wide Gironde estuary to Blaye. The citadel of Blaye, rebuilt by Vauban, rises majestically above the river. Over the right bank of the Gironde, you cycle through the Côtes de Blaye and Côtes de Bourg wine regions.
Via the Route de la Corniche, a narrow road between high cliffs and the Gironde, you cycle to Bourg-sur-Gironde. Strategically located at the point where the Dordogne and Garonne rivers merge into the Gironde, the pretty village of Bourg has played an important role in local history for centuries. You will stay here in a castle or in a castle further down the road in Virsac.
