Regal Residences

Cycling along the French Loire, a visit to Château de Chambord is almost a rite of passage. When King Francis I fell from his horse during a hunting trip and was aided by Countess Thoury, he decided to build a château on that very spot as a token of gratitude. But not just any château—this one would stretch 156 meters long, 117 meters wide, surrounded by a 32-kilometer-long wall. Nearly two thousand workers labored non-stop for fifteen years to complete the royal residence. And when funds dried up, Francis I simply turned to his subjects to foot the bill.

Castles with Resounding Names

Stories like these are part of the charm of this hub-based cycling holiday, where each day brings one or more castles into view. You’ll ride from Blois—home to its own stunning château—and visit places like Cheverny, Amboise, Chambord, Bracieux, and Beaugency. And the castles? Their names sound as regal as their surroundings: from Château de Beauregard and Château de Troussay to the stately Demeure Royale.

You’ll Lose Count

Got a minute? Try counting them all: 365 towers, 440 rooms, 282 chimneys, and one central staircase. Or actually two—because the main staircase of Château de Chambord is a double helix. Take one side to go up and the other to go down, and you won’t cross paths. Perfect for a monarch who preferred not to bump into other palace dwellers. Francis I was definitely that kind of king. Visit the most impressive château along the Loire and imagine yourself as a fabulously wealthy sovereign.

Feasting on Stories

“Ici,” says the guide at Château de Blois firmly, pointing to the very spot where Henri de Guise was stabbed by forty armed guards. “On his way to King Henry III, the duke collapsed, gravely wounded, right in front of the king’s bed.” Stories like these are pure delight. As you stroll through the throne room, you can almost see kings gliding past in ermine robes. What a life they led. They indulged in every pleasure—and so do you, soaking up tales of intrigue, betrayal, and scandal. The château visits are a captivating interlude during your cycling adventures along the Loire.
