Danish crown jewels

Zealand is known for its impressive castles and gorgeous gardens. You can discover crown jewels like these from Copenhagen. You'll cycle along the coast, through an area filled with old oak trees, to the north. In Helsingør you can take the ferry for a tour of Sweden or you can have a relaxing picnic in the gardens of Sofiero Castle, looking out over the beautiful sea.

Royal tombs

Back in Denmark, after a beautiful trip along the coast and through the charming village of Gilleleje, new crown jewels such as the Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød, built in Dutch Renaissance style, will be awaiting you. Be sure to visit the gardens, and if possible, take a look inside. Then, over gently sloping farmland, you'll reach the Roskildefjord. Cycling along the water, the centuries-old Roskilde comes into view, famous for the cathedral with its royal tombs, after which you'll head back to Copenhagen.

A little Dutch in Denmark

One of the most impressive buildings in Denmark is the Dutch Renaissance-style Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød. The palace rises proudly from the photogenic lake Slotsø. You can visit the enormous Baroque garden for free, but don't forget to take a look inside the palace as well. If you want to see all eighty rooms with carpets, furniture, portraits and more, you will need at least three hours.

Tombs in Roskilde

Roskilde, about 36 km west of Copenhagen, shows you five original Viking ships that were found on the bottom of the Roskilde Fjord. Also impressive: the 12th-century Cathedral where Danish princes have been buried for centuries. You can visit all the tombs, such as the chapel of Christian IV who actually supervised the construction of his own final resting place. Due to its great historical value, the cathedral is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Regal residence

Amalienborg Palace consists of four city palaces around an octagonal square. Not too bad for Queen Margarethe II and her family. However, you won't be meeting them in the square as all palaces are connected underground. All the guards here look remarkably less stern than their colleagues at Buckingham Palace in London. The equestrian statue of Frederick V was made by the French sculptor Jaques Saly, who worked on it for thirty years. As a result, the statue reportedly cost as much as the palace itself.

Slender lady of Copenhagen

Along the way and outside the city centre, you will find Copenhagen's most famous statue: the Little Mermaid. The famous character from Hans Christan Andersen's fairy tale has been attacked several times. One time she was doused with red paint and there even was the time she got beheaded. Some Copenhageners do not think the statue is representative of the city. But despite all those attacks, the slender lady has proudly been sitting on her rock in the harbor for over ninety years!
