A feast for the eye and the stomach

Staying at the Van Eyck hotel in Maaseik, Belgium, you'll discover just how beautiful both Limburgs are. As soon as you cross the Dutch border, Thorn immediately makes a name for itself. The abbey church dominates the famous white town. In Belgian Limburg, the Hoge Kempen National Park offers you a lot of natural greenery. Spotless white

It might feel like a village, but Thorn used to be a mini-principality for eight hundred years. More than thirty abbess queens held sway there, until the French arrived in 1794. The French introduced a new tax: the larger your windows, the more you had to pay. So what did the poor residents do? They bricked up their windows and disguised their poverty by whitewashing all the houses. Nowadays, it is exactly that spotless white that attracts many visitors.

St. Peter's Church restored in all its glory

"Hail Mary..." With the rosary in her hands, a church visitor murmurs het silent prater. You stroll, almost tiptoeing, through the centuries-old St. Peter's Church in Sittard. The oldest parts of this Gothic basilica date from the 15th century. The church has not always been as beautiful as it is now. In 1677, French troops stormed the church and basically took whatever they could. Part of the vault of the nave and transept was destroyed. To make matters worse, another part collapsed five years later due to neglect. Fortunately, its glory can now be admired again, and there is no longer any large-scale looting.
