Alpine joy

The combination of fresh mountain air, mighty nature and the physical effort of a nice bike ride is what brings a person joy. This is something you'll notice immediately, when taking the first trip through the Alpine crown jewel of Austria: the Zillertal. Flanked by majestic thousand-metre peaks, you will discover charming villages, sloping Alpine meadows, rustling streams and, with a bit of luck, a leaping ibex.

Five beautiful routes

For this holiday we have set out five beautiful cycling routes, as well as a relaxing hike. Start, for example, with a short tour to the cozy village of Fügen, or cycle along the River Inn to Innsbruck and the famous Kufstein. The tour to Mayrhofen, at the end of the Zillertal, also takes you through numerous villages and settlements and their characteristic Austrian 'gemütlichkeit'. Another final route takes you to Schwaz, where you can visit one of Europe's largest silver mines.

Fortress with a message

Kufstein Fortress is a reminder of how different things used to be in, and surrounding, the town of Kufstein. The fortification was the scene of many armed conflicts and repeatedly changed ownership. In the 16th centry, Emperor Maximilian I had the building converted into a proud fortress after which it passed into Austrian ownership in 1814. Now, the municipality of Kufstein is the owner of the fortress, which nowadays not only tells tales about its heroic past, but also functions as a setting for theatre shows and concerts. Noteworthy is the Heroes Organ; with its 4,948 pipes it's the largest organ in the world, and its sounds can be heard all over the city, every day, to remind us of armed conflicts in the world, and to stress the importance of peace.

A true Austrian gem

There's no place else like Tyrol if you're after that real Austrian feeling. With its cozy, authentic wooden houses, the cheerful jingle of cowbells and the typical Tyrolean folk music, you'll experience the ultimate Austrian atmosphere. During various routes you will discover how the Zillertal - right at the heart of Tyrol - easily captures the hearts of cyclists. Soon enough, you'll find yourself falling in love with this beautiful valley and its impressive nature.

Passionate Innsbruck

Innsbruck generously shares with us its mighty monuments, baroque churches and impressive palaces, and ofcourse, the Golden Roof: the famous showpiece with 2,657 gilded copper roof tiles. Commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I, as a gift to his wife Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan. The loving couple could retreat right around the corner for some alone time. That's where we'll find the Imperial Hofburg, which is, together with Schloss Schönbrunn and the Vienna Hofburg, one of the three most important buildings in Austria. Impressive spaces such as the Great Hall, the Guards Hall, the Chinese Room and the Hofburg chapel show just how powerful and wealthy the rulters of that time were.

Stairway to heaven

During the day you can enjoy clean air and beautiful nature. It truly feels 'heavenly' on the high alpine pastures. During this cycling holiday we also offer a beautiful walk to the Penkenjoch. You'll either take your own car or the train to Mayrhofen, walk through the pleasant centre to the valley station of the Penken gondola, get in and zoom up to an altitude of 1.765 metres. Once arrived, you will first walk to the Penkenjoch, after which you descend through the alpine meadows and over a 'Naturlehrpfad', on which you'll find plenty of information about the surrounding Alpine flora and fauna, down to the Almstüberl. Out on the patio of the mountain hut you can enjoy a beautiful view of the thousand-metre peaks around you.
