Crossing borders

From apfelstrüdel to carbonara, from the heart of the Austrian Alps to the Adriatic Sea in Italy. Crossing borders has never been more pleasant. A journey that sets off in the city of Villach where you'll be greeted with plenty of Austrian charm. First, a visit to the Altstadt, a climb up the 14th-century St. Jacob's Church and a coffee with, yes indeed, apfelstrüdel. Sit down on the patio of Hotel Post, where Empress Maria Theresa once stayed. Then, our journey continues: over nice and easy cycle paths, old railroad lines and car-free roads where you'll cycle mostly along the banks of wide rivers.

From mountain peak to hill country

Won't you look at that, the border is in sight. Auf Wiedersehen. The journey after Tarvisio, toward medieval Venzone is one of spectacular beauty, we think so at least. Then the mountains give way to rolling hills. With the high peaks of the Alps towering over your back, before you lies the Adriatic coastline. But first, the authentic Italian cities of Udine and Palmanova. Finally, in Grado, your Carbonara awaits. Prego!

Gelato in Palmanova

The ancient fortress town of Palmanova, with its massive and star-shaped fortress walls, is a beauty so grand that UNESCO decided to place it on its World Heritage List, along with the apology that it should've happened sooner. The first stone was laid as early as 1593. Since then, it has had many turbulent moments, even Napoleon targeted the city. Three monumental gates provide access to this old town with its narrow streets and its hexagonal, incredibly large Piazza. About time for some delicious ice cream.

Bellissimo Grado

The area between Venice and Trieste is a lagoon filled with picturesque islands. In the middle lies the relatively unknown seaside town of Grado, also on an island. The residents proudly call their city Isola del Sole: island of the sun. Very promising we'd say. Actually, it hasn't always been a seaside town. The Romans once founded it as a port for their inland city of Aquileia. Now a village, but the Via Sacra still reminds of those Roman times. Later, the port was owned by the Republic of Venice for centuries, after which it became property of Habsburg rulers, such as Emperor Francis Joseph I. In 1892, he was the one who ordered Grado to be turned into a seaside town. And until this day, that has turned out to be bellissima.
