Cycling holiday Alpe Adria Radweg from Salzburg to Grado

After starting in Salzburg, the Alpe Adria Radweg goes through the romantic Gastein valley and along the idyllic Drau to sunny Villach, among other places. The major climbing is avoided by some tunnel passages by train. From Villach, the tour gets a bit lighter, partly cycling on railway cycle paths, the mountains give way to gently undulating farmland and finally reaching the Adriatic Sea. » read more about Cycling holiday Alpe Adria Radweg from Salzburg to Grado

Like music to my ears!

With its many churches, monasteries, squares and palaces, musical Salzburg sets the tone for this journey. Starting off, you'll be exploring the city of Mozart and Maria. In the beautiful Mirabellgarten, Julie Andrews as Maria, together with the seven Von Trapp children, sang - do, re mi - down the baroque stairs. About the ancient Celt town of Hallein, about the world's largest ice cave, the Eisriesenwelt, about the Liechtensteinklamm, one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps, or about the formidable Gasteiner Ache waterfall in the mountain town of Bad Gastein. In the days that follow, so - do, re mi - the hymn continues. For Spittal an der Drau with its Renaissance castle Porcia and for the small, old spa town of Villach and its southern charm.

From mountain peak to hill country

First, a visit to the Altstadt, a climb up the 14th-century St. Jacob's Church and a coffee with, yes indeed, apfelstrüdel. Then, our journey continues: over nice and easy cycle paths, old railroad lines and car-free roads where you'll cycle mostly along the banks of wide rivers. And look at that, the border is in sight. Auf Wiedersehen. The journey after Tarvisio, toward medieval Venzone is one of spectacular beauty, we think so at least. Then the mountinas give way to rolling hills. With the high peaks of the Alps towering over your back, before you lies the Adriatic coastline. But first, the authentic Italian cities of Udine and Palmanova. Finally, in Grado, your Carbonara awaits. Prego!

Mozartkugeln

Around 1900 in Salzburg, at Getreidegasse 3, near Schatz Konditorei, the Mozartkugel was born: a round chocolate bonbon filled with nougat, pistachio and marzipan. A tribute to the prodigy who had been playing the piano from the age of three, started the violin only a year later, composed his first piece of music when he was five, and who had several operas to his name by the age of twelve.

Gorgeous Gazebo

The Hellbrunner Allee in Salzburg takes you straight to Schloss Hellbrunn in 2.5 km. A quiet oasis along centuries-old oaks, chestnuts, beeches and poplars. At the entrance of the castle however, the quiet is nowhere to be found. This is where the gazebo used in The Sound of Music is located. Its original location was at Schloss Leopoldskron, but since too many fans entered the garden uninvited, they decided to move it. Now, almost sixty years later, the movie still appears to attract hordes of fans, pilgrims almost, to Salzburg.

Bellissimo Grado

The area between Venice and Trieste is a lagoon filled with picturesque islands. In the middle lies the relatively unknown seaside town of Grado, also on an island. The residents proudly call their city Isola del Sole: island of the sun. Very promising we'd say. Actually, it hasn't always been a seaside town. The Romans once founded it as a port for their inland city of Aquileia. Now a village, but the Via Sacra still reminds of those Roman times. Later, the port was owned by the Republic of Venice for centuries, after which it became property of Habsburg rulers, such as Emperor Francis Joseph I. In 1892, he was the one who ordered Grado to be turned into a seaside town. And until this day, that has turned out to be bellissima.
